Social & Image — Compliance as Code: On-Chain Screening, KYC/AML Programs, and the Travel Rule

X (Twitter)

A screen-only sanctions check on a public chain is a suggestion, not a control — anyone can call the contract directly. But address screening still isn't identity KYC, and it doesn't satisfy the FATF travel rule. What each control actually does 👇 🔗

Sanctions screening is one pillar of a BSA/AML program — not the whole house. On a public blockchain, that distinction gets sharp fast: if your screening check lives only in the website, a sanctioned party who never loads your interface walks right past it, because the settlement contracts are directly callable. US sanctions exposure is effectively strict liability, so "where does enforcement actually bind?" is the only question that matters.

This Advanced briefing works through the compliance reality of on-chain screening:

  • Why a contract-level gate must be fail-closed — deny when the data source can't give a clean answer
  • Why entry is screened but exit never is (screening a held position becomes a de facto asset freeze)
  • The distinction professionals must hold: address screening answers "is this address listed?", not "who is this person?" — it is not identity KYC
  • Why a screening gate does not satisfy the FATF travel rule, which is about intermediaries exchanging originator/beneficiary identity data

Honest throughout about limits, and explicitly not legal advice.

How are you drawing the line between address screening and true CDD in your own crypto risk framework?

A restrained, institutional editorial illustration for a 16:9 banner: a single secure gate or turnstile set into a long transparent glass wall, symbolizing a control that binds at the settlement layer rather than the surface — figures and value flows can only pass through the one gate, none around it. Deep navy and teal base palette with a single warm amber accent light on the gate mechanism, clean modern vector style, soft directional lighting, sophisticated and understated, not flashy crypto art. No text, no logos, no watermarks. Aspect ratio 16:9.
