Overview

This appendix documents alternative integration approaches that were evaluated during the research phase. While the platform-specific approach (Option 1) was selected as the recommended implementation path, these alternatives provide valuable context for understanding the decision-making process and may be useful for future considerations.

Recommended Approach: Platform-Specific Mechanisms - ClearPath: LMSR + Nightmarket privacy - FairWins: V3 concentrated liquidity

The following options were evaluated but not recommended given the platform-specific approach is optimal for the dual-platform structure.


Option 2: Parallel Markets (Both Platforms)

Concept

Run both LMSR and V3 pools side-by-side for the same tokens on both platforms.

Advantages

  • ✅ Users choose preferred mechanism on each platform
  • ✅ Arbitrage ensures price consistency
  • ✅ Gradual adoption path for V3
  • ✅ Maintains full backward compatibility
  • ✅ Flexibility for different user preferences

Disadvantages

  • ❌ Liquidity fragmentation on each platform
  • ❌ User confusion about which to use
  • ❌ Potential for price discrepancies
  • ❌ Higher complexity than platform-specific approach
  • ❌ Two systems to maintain per platform
  • ❌ Arbitrage overhead reduces efficiency

Use Case

  • Could be used if both platforms want both options
  • Suitable for experimental phase to test user preferences
  • Not recommended as final state due to complexity and fragmentation

The parallel markets approach splits liquidity within each platform, reducing the depth available to traders on either mechanism. This defeats the purpose of using V3's concentrated liquidity for efficiency. Additionally, maintaining two systems per platform significantly increases complexity without clear benefits given the distinct requirements of ClearPath (privacy) and FairWins (efficiency).


Option 3: Hybrid Model

Concept

Use LMSR as base layer with V3 as supplementary liquidity.

Advantages

  • ✅ Enhanced efficiency near market price (V3)
  • ✅ Reduced capital requirements overall
  • ✅ Fallback mechanism if V3 liquidity insufficient

Disadvantages

  • ❌ Higher gas costs per trade
  • ❌ Challenging to implement privacy consistently
  • ❌ Router becomes single point of failure
  • ❌ Difficult to predict execution path for users
  • ❌ Arbitrage between pools adds overhead

Use Case

  • Could work for platforms with highly variable liquidity
  • Suitable for transition period from LMSR to V3
  • Not optimal for long-term given platform-specific needs

The hybrid model adds significant complexity through the routing layer. For ClearPath, privacy is paramount and LMSR alone suffices. For FairWins, full V3 adoption provides better efficiency than splitting between two systems. The routing overhead and gas costs outweigh the benefits of having both mechanisms.


Option 4: Specialized Markets

Concept

Use V3 exclusively for specific market types based on characteristics.

Market Type Mapping

LMSR Markets (Keep as-is)

  • ClearPath governance proposals: Privacy required
  • FairWins markets with resolution risk: Bounded loss protection
  • Markets requiring privacy: Nightmarket integration
  • Low-volume prediction markets: Not worth V3 complexity
  • Binary outcome markets: LMSR optimized for this

V3 Pools (New addition)

  • Secondary market for redeemed tokens: Post-resolution trading
  • Stablecoin pairs (USDC/USDT/DAI): Standard DEX functionality
  • DAO governance tokens: High liquidity, active trading
  • High-volume event markets: Benefits from concentrated liquidity
  • Multi-outcome markets (future): More complex than binary

Decision Criteria

Market Type Decision Tree:
1. Privacy required? → LMSR
2. Volume > 50k USDC? → V3
3. Resolution risk high? → LMSR
4. Multi-outcome? → V3
5. Default → LMSR

Advantages

  • ✅ Right tool for right job
  • ✅ Clear separation of concerns
  • ✅ No system conflicts
  • ✅ Simpler than hybrid approach
  • ✅ Can optimize each mechanism independently

Disadvantages

  • ❌ Users need to understand distinction
  • ❌ Still requires two codebases
  • ❌ Less synergy between systems
  • ❌ Ambiguous edge cases (e.g., medium volume markets)
  • ❌ Complex decision logic for market creation

Use Case

  • Could work for platforms with very diverse market types
  • Suitable if clear categorization exists
  • Not optimal given ClearPath/FairWins already provide categorization

The platform-specific approach (Option 1) already provides natural market categorization: ClearPath = governance = privacy = LMSR, FairWins = predictions = efficiency = V3. Adding a second layer of market-type-based decisions within platforms would create unnecessary complexity and confusion.


Option 5: Post-Resolution Secondary Market

Concept

Use V3 pools exclusively for trading resolved tokens before redemption.

Flow

Market Lifecycle with Post-Resolution V3:

1. Trading Phase
   └─► LMSR market (as usual)

2. Market Resolves (e.g., PASS wins)
   └─► PASS tokens can redeem for 1 USDC

3. V3 Pool Opens: PASS/USDC
   └─► Immediate liquidity option

4. Winners Trade
   ├─► Sell PASS for ~0.99 USDC (instant exit)
   └─► Or wait and redeem for 1 USDC

5. Arbitrageurs
   └─► Buy PASS at discount, redeem at par

Pricing Dynamics

Post-Resolution PASS Token Value:
- Redemption value: 1.00 USDC (guaranteed)
- V3 pool price: 0.98-0.99 USDC (discount for immediacy)
- Arbitrage spread: 1-2% (covers gas + capital cost)
- Time to redemption: 1-7 days (depending on protocol)

Advantages

  • ✅ No conflict with LMSR during active trading
  • ✅ Provides early exit option for winners
  • ✅ Useful for winners who need immediate liquidity
  • ✅ Simple to implement (add pool after resolution)
  • ✅ Pure arbitrage opportunity attracts liquidity
  • ✅ No impact on main market mechanism

Disadvantages

  • ❌ Limited use case (post-resolution only)
  • ❌ Arbitrage opportunity (cost to winners)
  • ❌ Requires liquidity provision in redemption period
  • ❌ May not have enough volume to justify
  • ❌ Additional smart contract complexity

Implementation Considerations

When to Open Pool: - Immediately after resolution - After challenge period ends - Based on market size threshold

Liquidity Provision: - Protocol could seed initial liquidity - Arbitrageurs provide depth - Auto-close after redemption deadline

Fee Structure: - Lower fees (0.05%) since price predictable - Fees offset gas costs - Competition keeps spreads tight

Use Case

  • Could be valuable for large markets with long redemption periods
  • Useful if gas costs make small redemptions uneconomical
  • Provides instant liquidity for market winners
  • Optional enhancement that doesn't affect core mechanics

Why Not Primary Recommendation

While this option has merit as a future enhancement, it doesn't address the core question of what mechanism to use for active market trading. It's orthogonal to the platform-specific approach and could potentially be added to either platform later if demand exists. The focus should be on getting the primary trading mechanism right first.

Potential Future Implementation

This approach could be revisited in Phase 5 (Advanced Features) of the FairWins V3 roadmap as an optional liquidity enhancement for resolved markets.

Decision Rationale

Why Platform-Specific Approach Won

  1. Natural Alignment: ClearPath's governance focus requires privacy (LMSR), FairWins' prediction focus benefits from efficiency (V3)

  2. No Fragmentation: Each platform has unified liquidity in its chosen mechanism

  3. Clear User Experience: Platform choice determines mechanism—no additional decisions needed

  4. Reduced Complexity: No routing, no arbitrage between mechanisms, simpler to maintain

  5. Optimal for Each Use Case: Privacy where critical, efficiency where beneficial

Key Decision Factors

ClearPath Requirements: - Privacy is non-negotiable for governance - Bounded loss protects DAO treasury - LMSR + Nightmarket proven and mature - Predictable pricing for institutional decisions

FairWins Requirements: - High volume justifies V3 complexity - Community LP participation increases engagement - Transparency acceptable for public markets - Capital efficiency important for growth

Lessons from Alternatives

Each alternative approach provided valuable insights:

  • Parallel Markets: Confirmed that splitting liquidity is counterproductive
  • Hybrid Model: Showed routing complexity outweighs benefits
  • Specialized Markets: Revealed platform-level categorization is sufficient
  • Post-Resolution: Identified potential future enhancement orthogonal to core decision

Future Reconsideration

These alternatives should be reconsidered if:

  1. Platform Requirements Change: If ClearPath needs public markets or FairWins adds governance
  2. Technology Advances: If privacy-preserving V3 becomes feasible
  3. User Demand: If users explicitly request multiple mechanisms per platform
  4. Market Conditions: If liquidity dynamics significantly change

However, the fundamental alignment between platform purpose and optimal mechanism is unlikely to change.
